Affirmations
Affirmations are positive thoughts and/or sentences that describe a desired situation, and which are repeated many times,
in order to make an impression on the subconscious mind and trigger it into positive action. In order to ensure the
effectiveness of the affirmations, they have to be repeated with attention, conviction, intention and desire.

A good example is from a childrens book “The Little Engine that Could”. It sometimes has been our mantras through
adulthood when things get tough to reiterate, “I think I can….I think I can….” If you believe you can, you will. You are
giving yourself positive affirmations. You believe you will overcome and through the power of intention and affirmations,
you will.

More than often people repeat negative sentences and statements, concerning diverse situations in their lives, and
consequently bring upon themselves undesirable situations.
An example is
‘this job is making me sick to my stomach’. Before we knows it, you are experiencing stomach aches and
stomach problems. Have you ever said,
‘oh my aching back’ and before you knew it, your back started to hurt? We fill our
minds with these sayings without giving thought to what we really are saying.

Affirmations have the ability to work both ways. It can build something up or they can be used to destroy the intention.

Have you ever heard of creative visualization? Affirmations can help create those visualization. There is a quote I once
heard (not sure who said it though) “If you perceive it, you can achieve it.” The repeated words build mental images and
scenes in the mind. The words help us to focus on the situation, the objective that we hope to create or achieve. Frequent
repetitions are made so the subconscious mind is willing to accept them, and then it influences and affects the way one
thinks, acts and behaves.

Hypnotherapists use creative visualization to achieve the results the client is seeking.
The conscious mind, (the mind we use to do our thinking) starts this process, and then the subconscious mind takes
charge. This means that the most frequent thoughts that pass through your mind, ultimately affect your life with the
greatest impact.

We often repeat affirmations, without even being aware of the process. We use them when we tell ourselves that we can't
do something, or when we believe we are going to fail. The subconscious mind will always accept and follows what we tell
it.

How to Repeat Affirmations

It is better to repeat affirmations that are not too long. If something is too long, you could lose focus and forget the
affirmation itself.  They can be repeated, when your mind is not engaged in something in particular, such as when
traveling in a bus or a train, waiting in line, walking etc. Do not use affirmations when doing activities that require your
full attention such as driving or doing something mechanical.

If you can find that you can devote 10-15 minutes a day to the process, this works best. You can, however do this more
than once a day if so inclined. Also, it does not have to be done everyday, but it is suggested.

To receive the full impact of the intention of the affirmation, there should be no physical, emotional or mental tension
while repeating them. The stronger the concentration, the more faith you have in what you are doing, the more feelings
you put into the act, the stronger and faster will be the results. This should not be a chore or something you need to do to
cross off on your ‘to do’ list.

It is very important to choose only positive affirmations. Choose your words carefully. Think of the negative and positve
impact it could have. If for example your intention is to lose weight, do not say, "I am not fat, I am losing weight." By
saying this sentence you are repeating to your subconscious mind that you are fat. The word "losing" also evokes negative
images.  It is better to say, "My body is in good shape and is a healthy weight”. What do you see in your minds eye when
you repeate this? The words chosen should evoke positive images in the mind.

Lets try something that has to do with money. Its something all of use, its something we all could use more of at one point
in our life or another. It is important to affirm in the present tense, not the future tense. You do not want to say "I will be
rich", this means you are intending to be rich one day. It is more effective to say, and feel, "I am rich now", and the
subconscious mind will work overtime to make this happen in the present.

When thoughts are repeated, they soon become a belief, and then we think this belief is our reality. In this way we form
fears of poverty, health, weight and relationships and the emotions connected with these beliefs can even become our
comfort zone, no matter how negative they might be. Since we created these beliefs we can also change them. This is
where true freedom fills us.  Focused affirmations are a great way to start your new tomorrows. When you feel tension,
stress, or any type of anxiety, an affirmation which makes you feel good is where you need to go.

Results sometimes may come fast, and at other times may take more time to manifest. Achieving results through the
power of affirmations depends on how much time, energy, faith and feelings you invest in your affirmations, on how big
or small your goal is, and the strength of your desire to see the affirmation materialize.

Here is some sample Affirmations, but the best ones are the ones you create yourself from within:

How Affirmations can impact your life

Affirmations change negative thoughts into positive ones – always a great remedy for negativity.
Affirmations can help you become more assertive, self-confident, and happier.
You learn to be kinder and more accepting of those around you realizing that everything does not revolve around you and
your needs. Affirmations can adjust your attitude during daily routines. They can help you deal with emotions and calm
you down.
You release negative frequency emotions - fear, hared, guilt, anger, abuse, etc. and replace them with positive ones.
You understand that people can love you and that you can love others without judgment and without receiving
something in return.

By using the power of affirmations you state what you want to be true in your life. You see reality, as you want it to be. A
powerful quotation from Dr. Wayne Dyer that I find fitting is ‘Our Intention creates our reality”. How true!
