Astral Travel Astral Projection
|

Astral projection or astral travel refers to the experience of a person's conscious awareness leaving the physical body to
observe the world from an independent and objective point of view. This is also referred to as an out-of-body experience
(OBE).
Mainstream science dismisses astral projection as being impossible according to the laws of physics as they are currently
understood.
A common example involves near-fatal accidents where the subject later reports floating above the body near the ceiling
in the hospital, watching on as an objective observer, taking in the actions and conversations of the medical personnel
working 'below' them. People who have recovered in such instances have reported watching their doctors pronounce
them dead, or calling for specific life-saving techniques later recounted and verified by those present. When astral
projection occurs under these circumstances it is referred to as a near-death-experience (NDE).
Aside from times of crisis, astral projection can take place when meditating, in trance, resting or while sleeping. Rather
than hover over his or her body, the subject might travel great distances, such as to other states or even to the ‘other
side’.
The astral world consists of astral matter, and all physical objects have a replica in the astral. There is therefore a
complete physical copy of everything in the astral world, but in addition there are things in the astral which have no
counterpart in the physical.
In the scheme just described, those who have the ability are supposed to be able to see the nature of a person's thoughts
by changes in the color and form of the astral body. All around the physical being there can be seen the bright and
shining colors of the larger astral body, making up the astral aura. The aura is multi-colored and brilliant, or dull,
according to the character or quality of the person .
All these conceptions are of special relevance because of the fact that the astral body is supposed to be able to separate
from the physical and travel without it. It is said that in sleep the astral body leaves the sleeping body. When we are
sleep we leave our physical bodies in bed and travel to the astral world (or dream world).
This takes place so that the vital body (or aura) can “recharge” the physical body, which has been drained of energy in
the normal daily activities.
In astral projection the consciousness can travel almost without limitation, but it travels in the astral world. It therefore
sees not the physical objects, but their astral counterparts, and in addition the beings that live in the astral realms. The
weary traveler can become confused by the power of his own illusions. In this state one can appear, as an apparition to
anyone who has 'astral sight.' Indeed one can appear to other too, but to do so requires some involvement of lower
matter, for example of etheric matter, as in ectoplasm. Ectoplasm is considered to be the materialization of the astral
body .
When we are in our astral body, we can go anywhere and learn about many things, including things about the past
and the future. This happens because in the astral world, which is governed by other laws, time does not exist, but
rather only eternity.
Also, when we are in astral bodies we can fly and move as fast as thoughts. Have you ever had a dream that you were
flying? Or, that one moment they were one place and the next in another entirely different one. That is astral travel or
astral projection.
An aspect of astral traveling which has become important in later writings is the silver cord. It is held that in life the
astral body is connected to its physical body by an infinitely elastic but strong cord, of a flowing and delicate silver color.
Traditionally the cord must remain connected or death will ensue. As one approaches death, the astral gradually loosens
itself, lifts up above the physical, and then the cord breaks to allow the higher bodies to leave. Death is thus seen as a
form of permanent astral projection.
There is no risk or danger in astral travel or astral projection because, besides being a natural human function, we do
every time we fall asleep. The astral body remains linked to the physical body by the silver cord. This cord stretches into
the infinite, never breaks and always allows us to return to our physical body in total safety.
